Steenberg’s Bistro Sixteen 82 was our Saturday morning decadent breakfast stop for the week. The spot is obviously quite popular, as we (rather annoyingly) couldn’t get a table reserved a week ago. Today was more successful on the booking front and I was actually quite excited at the prospect of the meal.

For those of you who haven’t seen Steenberg’s rebuilt tasting room and bistro… well, let’s just say that a bit of dosh was spent there. It is magnificent, with rim flow pools and manicured lawns outside and modern furnishings inside. Not to mention going for a pee, you feel as if you are in the vineyards – see the photo below.

The breakfast menu is small, and includes traditional breakfast dishes like fresh berries with yoghurt or bacon and eggs.  Pricing is very reasonable, ranging from R40 to R60.  The more interesting dishes were eggs royale, eggs Benedict and the chef’s omelette. Something that stood out was the bacon they used, which was more pork belly than bacon, and was delicious.

The bread was amazing, made with a LOT of butter, giving it the taste of a fresh, soft croissant. I felt my arteries clog up and my heart shutting up shop just looking at it.

My better half had the omelette which was stuffed with asparagus, tomato, parmesan, garlic and basil, making it the most interesting of the lot. I had the eggs Benedict, which came perched on top of a potato rosti giving it a lovely crunchy texture to compliment the rich creaminess of the Hollandaise sauce.

The service was efficient, unobtrusive and rather stellar.

The thing that made me the happiest about the whole experience however (except the glass of Steenberg Brut MCC I had with my eggs!) was the fact that they served me a café latte in a proper cup and not in those ridiculous glass mugs. I don’t give a shit about seeing a layer of milk, a layer of espresso and a layer of foam and I have never understood why even upmarket restaurants insist on serving your latte to you in that way.  Bistro Sixteen 82 – thank GOODNESS – got that one right.

Steenberg Brut MCC… the cornerstone of ANY nutritious breakfast!

I am looking forward to having lunch there soon.
