The Monarch Tuksi Travesty

I don’t normally use this forum as a place to have a rant. Yet today I am annoyed. No… Not a strong enough word… I am PISSED OFF. I found out today that the City of Cape Town has pulled the Monarch Tuksi Company off the road. How did I find out about this? When I tried to get a ride from town to my place in Sea Point and had to fork out R80 for a metered taxi ride that would’ve cost me half that with the Tuksi.
Ah yes… pure genius. The City of Cape Town’s Robin Carlisle and Brett-lets-kill-all-the-small-kids-and-all-dogs-on-the-promenade-under-our-bicycle-wheels-Herron had a collective brain fart and pulled a very good idea off the road. All the while there are literally 100’s of unlicensed metered taxis running unregulated up and down the streets of Cape Town. Let us call this what it is – a fucking travesty. It is easier to cut corners like the typical politicians they are and pull the Monarchs from the road – guys who are TRYING to do things by the book – than it is to sort out the unlicensed, unroadworthy 1990 Toyota Tazz driven by an illegal immigrant.
Let us talk further about regulating the metered, LICENSED taxi industry. These are guys who work 24 hours on, 24 hours off. I’ve on more than one occasion been in a taxi (Sport Taxis were normally the culprits) where the guy told me he’s been on for 2 days straight, whilst he’s speeding down Adderley Street, looking so spaced out and tired that I fear for my life and for those of the pedestrians on the sidewalk. Why is this allowed to happen Messrs. Carlisle and Herron? Why don’t you do something about that? I bet you didn’t even know, because you’re more interested in holding on to your jobs than you are in serving the public.
I wasn’t aware that there was an issue with the licenses for operating the Tuksi business in Cape Town until the Carte Blanche inset a week or 2 ago. It is such a brilliant business concept, and one that is sorely needed in our starved of proper public transport city. I broke my own cardinal rule and actually watched that depressing show to see what’s going on. The Monarch Tuksi Company apparently does not fit into the City’s “Transport Plan”. What plan is that? The same plan where the My Citi buses haven’t started on its routes to Sea Point, Camps Bay and beyond because the 2 politicians previously mentioned (I use politician as the ugliest swear word I know) can’t get their shit together? The plan where operating licenses were issued to Monarch Tuksi Co in the first place? There is no plan here except to screw over the small guy. There is just the typical bumbling you get when you let a South African politician near anything – irrespective of the party they belong to.
So what are the options? With no My Citi buses to Sea Point and no Monarch Tuksi Co either we’re left with unreliable, expensive metered taxis – tons of them unlicensed. And of course the mini bus taxis and Golden Arrow buses where its a lottery whether you are going to arrive at your destination alive if at all. And of course your own car… don’t be surprised if there is a sudden spike in drinking and driving again. And that ladies and gentleman is the crux of the matter here. We want everyone to stop drinking and driving, but the 2 chops above just took away one of our options, and haven’t rolled out the other one yet because they didn’t do their homework properly. They are sitting in their ivory tower making decisions that affect normal people trying to adhere to the laws of the country and the laws of common decency and they are making it very difficult for us.
So there it is. Get the Monarch’s back on the road asap. Its an absolute joke that they’re being targeted when there are so much more wrong with public transport. Who loses? We do.
Rant… Over.

I sincerely hope this “rant” will not only be published on Batonage.com. Send it out to the whole wide world; I am sure there are lots of people who feel exactly the same.
I am sick and tired of these politicians (all of them across the political spectrum) and their inability to get things right! They promise the world and once in charge become “draadsitters” – too scared to make the difficult decisions because it will upset the voters. He-lo this is why we vote, we empower “you = the politicians” to do things in our (your loyal voters) best interest.
(apologies – I might have gone on a bit)

Brilliant! Well said Batonage! Lets share this! Please bear in mind that when the Tuksis were pulled off the road, not only did two young men WHO DID EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK in terms of trying to make this business work, lose everything but the dozens of previously unemployed people that were employed as drivers also lost their jobs! Bloody disgusting! You cannot sit and enjoy a meal at one of the roadside restaurants in Cape Town without beggars hovering around because of the high levels of unemployment and when someone offers them employment, they are shut down! These two young men have worked their butts off and have only had three days off in over 6 months … and for what? It just makes me so mad! No wonder SA is experiencing the brain drain it is and youngsters are going overseas to seek their fortunes! PLEASE … lets do something to help them!

Thank you! I’m so tired of the City’s mafia tendencies. I hope they see this post.

I completely agree with you Hennie. We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and do we PAY for that privilege. Innovation is being targeted by our backwards politicians. We have a “transport plan” ?!? That’s news to me. The only “transport plan” that I’m interested in is the one that bans Golden Arrow and unlicensed taxis from our roads, and champions companies like Monarch Tuksi for trying to bring AFFORDABLE public transport to our streets.

I completely agree, Cape Town officials are seriously in need of a brain. Count on our government too stuff up the very thing this country needs the most of, Entrepreneurship.

City of Cape Town seems to have a policy in place where they are obliged to act without giving any thought to what they are doing. Once they then realise they have screwed up, they try not to take responsibility or ever actually fix it if possible.

I agree completely. Every night while on neighbourhood watch patrol we come across the dodgiest metered taxis you could imagine. Even the bigger companies are employing drivers with no SA license, never mind PDP’s, and most of the taxis we see are pure death-traps.
Although I havent made use of the Monarch Tuksi Company I have felt that they have really added some character to the city and have recommended them to many people.
Once again the DA shows just how in touch they are with peoples needs. Well done.

Oh I so agree on all points! This story seriously pissed me off as well. I actually can’t believe that these politicians can be so narrow-minded. Our public transport options are a joke and all the promises around the new MyCiti routes have not materialised. I had visions of taking the bus from town to the beach and was extremely excited. Now we’re heading into bloody winter again and still nothing. So ja… #frustrating

They promised MyCiti would be running by 2010.
Well…. I think they missed the deadline.
Now they’re stifling entrepreneurship / free enterprise.

This is a very one sided view (-and uninformed I dare say), I’d like to read a response from the otherside before making a decision on whether to sign this petition. I cannot accept the view that City officials are simply stupid, come on guys! Sometimes reasons for decisions aren’t always obvious nor have evil motives. Lets understand the whole matter before jumping to such harshness… From experience, this city’s management does try very hard to make it fair for everyone, I’d just like to see what they have to say first.
Mar 18, 2013 @ 12:02:06
Thank you for your comment. We asked the city to respond – read the comments I received from them on Twitter here http://batonage.com/2013/03/15/the-monarch-tuksi-travesty-part-2/ . The only responses they deemed worthy.
I’d love to hear what information you have that I don’t, that causes you to say the post is “uninformed”. Please enlighten us.
It might be a one sided view (that is what a blog is by the way and also given that Brett Herron et al couldn’t bother to speak to us) but the fact of the matter is that 20 people lost their jobs, the city is embroiled in court cases that is stopping the roll out of alternative public transport options (My City Buses) and then they are jumping up and down because people drink and drive. At the same time they tell everyone they want Cape Town to be a hub of entrepreneurship and be seen as a city of opportunity and job creation. This doesn’t add up. And nowhere did I say their reasons are evil. I said their actions are inconsistent and really have to query the competency of those in office – they nail these guys while they are pussy footing around the unlicensed meter taxis. The fact is that they took away a viable public transport option, can’t roll out the promised ones and they cost 20 people their livelihood. I’d love to hear them justify the job losses.

Wipe out the new guy, but let the major minibus taxi industry get away with murder? Who’s the boss?
