169 on Long
A new Restaurant/Bar/Club/Cigar Bar has opened at 227 Long Street (the old spot of the now defunct Cape to Cuba); taking over the good (décor and general ambience) and improving on the other fronts (food quality and service).

We visited with a Groupon voucher, expecting the usual you-pay-less-so-you-get-less attitude but were pleasantly surprised with the excellent service and fresh sushi. 169 On Long has special sushi platters (from R60 for 16 pieces) over and above their usual sushi menu. They also have an extensive pizza offering (ranging from R70), salads and tapas with the usual snack baskets. The cocktail list is extensive and while the wine list is quite small, so is the mark-up (Springfield Wild Yeast selling at R150 per bottle).
The upmarket 169 on Long oozes a sultry Cuban feel, equipped with an upstairs cigar bar and the downstairs, revamped larger cocktail bar. With the friendliest waiters and efficient service, this spot is perfect to enjoy a mouth-watering meal with friends and relax and unwind or party the night away.

I fully agree. The food and especially the service was excellent. Looks can also be deceiving as we did not expect to find such a gem upstairs. Definitely worth a visit!

I went there on Friday night for dinner and drinks.
It was the worst restaurant experience of my life.

Sorry to hear it was bad! We had a decent lunch there, but haven’t been for dinner yet. They were extremely attentive on the day and looked after us very well – and that on a Groupon voucher as well. Unfortunate to hear its going the regular Long Street route. Will give it one more try for dinner before passing final judgement. Would you mind giving more info into what went wrong on the evening?
