Heritage Day is a day to celebrate our diverse cultural heritage and the diversity of our beliefs and traditions.  Whether you make your braai broodjies with chutney and mayo or not; this is our heritage, our shared identity, with secret recipes handed down over generations…

Are you feeling the pressure of National Braai Day?  Not so sure about your braai skills or tired of slaving away making potato/carrot/green/3 bean salad?  Is your balcony too small to even light a candle or has your wife sold your Weber to the highest bidder after your last 2-day braai with your mates?

You can get into the spirit of Braai4Heritage without buying a single box of Blitz; just visit one of the establishments below offering their own take on National Braai Day and enjoy!  We will be updating this page as we receive more information on special events for the big Braai Day.

DELHEIM: A CELEBRATION OF HOME-GROWN HERITAGE

The 24th of September will see en-masse gathering around the great South African braai, Ukosa or Chisa Nyama depending on culture of origin, all in the name of national pride; while at Delheim wine farm in Stellenbosch, the home-fires will burn throughout the week.

National Braai Day, or Heritage Day, is a call to all South Africans to stand together and celebrate the things that make us unique. At Delheim, the Garden restaurant will serve delicious lunchtime braai-kos (cuisine) from Monday September 19th until Sunday September 25th. The pinnacle of activities will take place on National Braai Day itself, when live ambient music will play from 13h15. Clear views ofTableMountain (weather dependant of course!) will form a fitting backdrop to the proudly South African scene.

Guests are invited to book at restaurant@delheim.com, or phone 021 888 4607. Tickets for the day are priced at R150 per head, while the standard braai lunch menu will be R130 per head.  The three course braai-kos menu includes classic stuffed mushrooms with garlic and cheese, or snoek pate and freshly baked bread. Mains will be a medley of braaiedKaroo lamb chop, boerewors, chicken sosaties, salad and veg – potato and mealie of course – and what home-grown meal would be complete without koeksisters for dessert?

Visit www.delheim.com for further information, or the Delheim Facebook page.

NEETHLINGSHOF: PAYING IT FORWARD ON HERITAGE DAY

This year you don’t have to light your own fire; you can simply bring the whole family to Neethlingshof, that beautifully preserved estate outside Stellenbosch, where they will do it all for you.  You will be serving a good cause at the same time for Neethlingshof is joining forces with the Stellenbosch branch of the volunteer organisation Serve the City in hosting a  fundraiser braai for the benefit of one of the surrounding poverty-stricken areas.

The beneficiaries of the present fundraising efforts are the people of Enkanini, one of the extensions of Kayamandi, the black township on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Enkanini has some 6 000 inhabitants, many of them without jobs, and the members of Serve the City this past year have been working to provide them with basic necessities, especially for the children.

You can assist them in this task by coming, with your friends and families, to Neethlingshof where you will be richly rewarded. A ticket of R55 (R35 of that goes to Serve the City) buys you a glass of one of the estate’s delicious wines and a roosterkoek with a large, succulent piece of boerewors. Cooldrinks will be available for the kids.

At the event you can also buy a bottle of 2010 Malbec for R51, 15% less than the normal price of R60.

Time: 11:00 to 16:00

Place: Neethlingshof Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
