Glen Carlou’s unwooded Chardonnay 2011
Glen Carlou has been producing two of my favourite wooded Chardonnays for more than 20 years and with the release of their new unwooded Chardonnay they’ve firmly entrenched themselves on my Top 3 Unwooded Chardonnays list.
Their latest offering was vinified in Nomblot Eggs instead of stainless steel tanks and offers juicy fruit with palate weight – not something too easy to get right. Wine maker Arco Laarman says the Nomblot Egg’s porous clay-cement walls allows for natural oxygenation without oakiness delivered by oak barrels. Because the Egg is angle-free, it raises the lees and nourishes the wine while eliminating the need for batonnage.
This is the ideal summer wine: delivering bags of flavour without that heartburn-inducing acidity. Lovers of both wooded and unwooded Chardonnay will enjoy glass after glass!
Available only from Glen Carlou Estate at R78 per bottle.
